4. Births, Deaths and Marriages

Registrar General's Indexes from 1837 (microform), or Registrar General for Scotland's Computerised Index from 1855.

Locations Registrar General's indexes for England and Wales from 1837-1997, on microfiche.




5. Census returns

1841-1891 for the Blackburn with Darwen area.
Street indexes are available for all years.
Surname indexes are available for 1851,1861,1891
The 1881 National Surname Index for England and Wales is also available on microfiche and CD Rom.

6(b) City and Town Directories

The above directories cover Blackburn, but the main Blackburn directories start from 1868 and run until 1966. The majority of them were published by Barrett.

Lancashire and Cheshire Telephone Exchange Co.Ltd. List of subscribers for Blackburn, Feb. 1885.
The main set of telephone directories for the Blackburn area run from 1951 to date.

7(a) Electoral Registers

The Electoral Registers for Blackburn run from 1841 to date. From 1974 they also include Darwen.

Poll books for the 1852, 1853 and 1865 elections.

Microfiche copies for most of the Church of England parishes within Blackburn Diocese. Do not cover dates beyond 1900.
Selected Non-Conformist registers - some on fiche, some originals and some transcripts.
No Roman Catholic registers are held. These are available at the Lancashire Record Office.

There is not a separate guide to our collection as yet, but we are included in the Lancashire Library's "Guide to Lancashire Local Studies Collections".
There is an unpublished list of selected material suitable for Family History research.
